Sue Bedford (MSc Nutritional Therapy)

Are you experiencing bloating or constipation because of the hormones used in fertility treatment? Unfortunately, bloating is a very common side effect experienced by many undergoing fertility treatments. Staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water is a good starting point, as dehydration can sometimes worsen bloating.

Here are five top foods to pop into your shopping trolley to help you to reduce bloating……

Ginger: Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and may help alleviate bloating and digestive discomfort. You can enjoy ginger in various forms, such as ginger tea or adding fresh ginger to meals.

Peppermint: Peppermint has been traditionally used to relieve digestive issues and reduce bloating. Peppermint tea using fresh mint leaves and infusing in boiling water is delicious.

Papaya: Papaya contains enzymes like papain, which can aid in digestion and reduce bloating. It’s a delicious fruit that can be eaten fresh or added to smoothies.

Probiotic-rich Foods: Foods containing probiotics, such as yogurt, kefir, and fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi, can help promote a healthy balance of gut bacteria, potentially reducing bloating and supporting overall digestive health.

Fibre-rich Foods: Foods high in soluble fibre, like oats, lentils, and fruits (such as berries and apples), can help regulate bowel movements and prevent constipation, which may contribute to bloating.

As we are all unique it is important to check with your G.P or Qualified Nutritional Therapist/Dietician as to what is best for you to eat and drink personally to ensure that there are no interactions with any medication that you are taking……
