A 70-year-old woman in Uganda has successfully undergone in vitro fertilization (IVF) and given birth to twins
Safina Namukwaya welcomed a baby boy and girl at Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Uganda on November 29, according to a statement posted on the hospital’s Facebook page. Both twins weighed 3 lbs., 7 oz., as reported by local outlet NTV Uganda.
The hospital extended congratulations, emphasising that the accomplishment is more than a “medical success; it’s about the strength and resilience of the human spirit.”
Namukwaya acknowledged the challenges of pregnancy at her age, stating, “There was a time I felt very sick because of the pregnancy. I spent nearly all my savings. Then I went to a hospital and talked to the doctor about my condition.” The doctor assisted in securing funding for her to receive better care in another location, and she expressed gratitude for his generosity. However, she noted that her partner chose not to be involved after learning she was expecting twins, citing the common reluctance of men to embrace the idea of having more than one child.
In her interview, Namukwaya shared uncertainties about the future, stating, “I really don’t know” when asked if she’s ready to raise her babies. She added, “God is in charge. You see, you can have one child and feel overwhelmed. But here I am with twins at a time I am weak… I don’t know, but they say every child comes with their blessings.”
These twins mark Namukwaya’s second childbirth in three years, following the arrival of her daughter in 2020.
