More and more women around the world are considering egg freezing offering the potential option to become mothers without feeling pressured to interrupt their careers or worry about their relationship status.
This is also an increasing topic that Indian women in their 30s are choosing to embrace, one example is Prerna Sehgal, a 35-year-old single mother of two
Despite not finding a long term partner who was willing to share the responsibilities of parenthood, she had always wanted to be a mother. At the age of 28, she made the decision to freeze her eggs, guided by her doctor who assured her that a single round of harvesting her eggs at their optimal condition would be sufficient for future use.
Prerna’s partner agreed to donate his sperm, allowing her to have a baby as a single mother at the age of 31
Two years later, she had her second child. Prerna believes that egg freezing empowers women to make their own choices around motherhood, independent of their relationship status. It enables them to focus on their careers without worrying about the timing of starting a family. She encourages young women to consider freezing their eggs in their late 20s, although not a guarantee, it can offer the option to become mothers when they are ready, with or without a partner.
Another example is Anu Chopra, who decided to freeze her eggs at the age of 32 while working in the merchant navy with her husband
Their demanding job, which involved being at sea for extended periods, led them to postpone starting a family. Five years later, they used Anu’s thawed eggs through IVF and ICSI procedures to conceive and deliver a healthy baby.
Dr. Aruna Kalra, a gynecologist and obstetrician at CK Birla Hospital in Gurugram, India has seen a rise in the number of women opting for egg freezing. Initially, it was primarily carried out for medical reasons, such as preserving fertility before undergoing chemotherapy for breast or other cancers. However, more women are now choosing egg freezing to alleviate concerns about their biological clock and ensure the possibility of having a healthy baby in the future.
Egg freezing can be empowering by offering women the opportunity to take control of their reproductive choices
Women can plan for motherhood when they feel it is the right time for them, regardless of their relationship status or career demands. It provides peace of mind, knowing that they have options and can pursue their goals without compromising their dreams of becoming a mother.
