Researchers in Melbourne are making significant progress in developing artificial ovaries to address infertility caused by cancer treatments. The Royal Women’s Hospital team, led by Dr. Debra Gook, Head of Cryopreservation Services, is working on a pioneering project to counteract fertility issues resulting from cancer treatments
Dr. Gook’s research involves creating artificial ovaries designed to mimic the natural ovary’s fertility functions. Using animal models in the lab, the team aims to replicate the natural ovary’s ability to produce eggs and release steroid hormones. The ultimate goal is to provide hope and fertility solutions, particularly for young girls diagnosed with conditions like leukemia.

Female cancer survivors, especially those treated at a young age, often face challenges in conceiving.
Stacey-Lee Craanen, a 29-year-old patient who has battled leukemia and thyroid cancer, expressed optimism about the research offering hope for future cancer patients to preserve their fertility.
“If they do have a massive breakthrough that would be incredible,” she said.
Dr. Gook envisions that in the next five to ten years, artificial ovaries could become a groundbreaking technology for addressing infertility caused by cancer treatments. While the isolation and growth of human follicles present challenges compared to mouse trials, recent experiments with human cells have provided valuable insights.
The research progress has been made possible through funding from the Cancer Council Victoria.
