Exercise and IVF can be a beneficial combination for women undergoing fertility treatments. One of the most frequently asked topics is whether exercise has a detrimental influence on the outcome of IVF. Here are five physical activities that can help boost fertility and increase the chances of success.
Yoga
Yoga promotes physical, mental, and emotional health through postures, breath control, and meditation. Pelvic yoga positions can boost blood flow to the reproductive organs, balance hormones, and minimise stress and anxiety.
Walking
Walking is an easy, effective exercise that can be done daily. Different walking patterns in terms of intensity can be implemented in certain stages of the IVF treatment. Fast walking is a great cardiovascular exercise, preferably for the first days of the stimulation round, whereas regular walking can be implemented in the latter stages of IVF. Walking outside helps IVF patients feel positive, connecting them with nature, reducing stress, and cleaning their minds.
Swimming
This low-impact exercise works the whole body without pressing the joints, making it a great workout for IVF patients with joint problems or who want a change from traditional workouts. Swimming enhances strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health, improving well-being and fertility by providing mild resistance, making it ideal for muscle toning without injury. Remember, though, to maintain healthy hygiene practices while swimming to prevent any infections that could interfere with the IVF process.
Cycling
Outdoors or on a stationary bike, low-tensity cycling improves cardiovascular ability and reduces stress on the joints. Allows women to adjust the intensity based on their fitness level and preferences. Cycling boosts pelvic blood flow, improves reproductive health, and can also be fun and social, distracting from IVF treatments while still providing a great workout. Just be sure to wear proper safety gear and stay hydrated.
Pilates
This mind-and-body training helps to build basic strength, flexibility, and body structure. Pilates improves posture and balance by aiming at the deepest core muscles with controlled movements and precise breathing techniques. This free-tension exercise helps IVF patients strengthen pelvic floor muscles, improve posture, and reduce anxiety.
Keep in mind the following key points:
- Always consult with your gynaecologist before starting any new exercise routine, especially during IVF treatments.
- Listen to your body and modify movements as needed to avoid any strain or injury.
- Stay hydrated
- Maintain proper hygiene
- Avoid strenuous exercise prior to and shortly after the egg retrieval and a few weeks after the embryo transfer.
