Could Ukraine ban international surrogacy?

Ukrainian politicians are said to be considering banning foreign surrogacy

According to a report on CNN, lawmakers from President Zelensky’s government told CNN reporter Nic Robertson that the war with Russia has had such a devastating impact on the population that no children should be allowed to leave the country.

Despite requests for an interview, the lawmakers declined to talk to the US media outlet about the new proposals in more detail.

Before the war began, one surrogacy clinic in Ukraine, Biotexcom helped 450 children be born via surrogate mothers a year.

In 2022, that figure rose to 600 children, the owner of the company said he would have to close his business if the new law was implemented.

Albert Tochiovsky, who owns Biotexcom, said: “It will be the end of me and end the possibility of European families to have babies here.”

Nic, who is the international diplomatic editor for CNN, spoke to a woman who was seven months pregnant with her second surrogate baby.

She will give birth for an Italian couple and said the first time she was a surrogate she was able to buy her family an apartment.

This time around she is doing it to give her family better financial security.

She said: “This time was not an easy decision but we did it to provide for our family.”

To all the men and women living in Ukraine, who want so desperately want to be parents, we wish you love and strength.
