A woman from Glasgow has revealed she has given birth to her first child at the age of 54
Helen Dalglish, went through a mind-blowing 21 attempts to get pregnant over a 25-year period, spending a whopping £100,000 in the process.
She welcomed her daughter Daisy Grace after successful IVF treatment in Cyprus and is delighted.
She told the Daily Record: “When you get a little miracle at the end you forget about the 25 years. I was looking down and the bump was getting bigger and I thought, ‘Am I dreaming?’
“Even now looking at her, I cannot believe I am a mum. It’s surreal.”
Helen revealed she had moved from Scotland to Cyprus in her 20s and began trying for a baby with her then-husband at the age of 28.
Doctors had revealed she had a potential problem with the positioning of her uterus, but after moving back to Scotland, doctors did not seem concerned and diagnosed unexplained infertility’.
Over the next 20 years, Helen tried many times to get pregnant. After ten years she was told by a fertility doctor that she had a titled uterus and that any previous attempts to become pregnant would have ended in failure.
She did get pregnant three times but they all ended in miscarriage at about the ten-week mark.
She did lots of holistic treatments including meditation, yoga, and alternative health kicks, but nothing seemed to help.
On occasion, she said she wanted to give up and also take a break, but something kept her from doing it.
Sadly, during the journey, she lost her father after a serious illness. She said she remembered him telling her before he passed that she should not give up on her dream to have a family
Helen was persuaded by her new clinic, Dunya Fertility Centre that using donor eggs would be the best way forward.
She began treatment and even though she had several heartbreaking times, she and her partner continued to hope.
On the second attempt at IVF, after doctors had carried out a trial run to get the proper access needed to her uterus, she got a positive pregnancy test.
Despite being nervous about the viability of the pregnancy, Helen was kept a close eye on by her doctors.
She said: “I think my dad must have had something to do with it.
“When we came home after the birth, I burst into tears. It felt like 25 years of grief trying to escape and caught me at a moment where I wasn’t expecting it.
“It’s absolute heaven. She just keeps getting better. I would like to thank all the doctors and staff at the clinic.
“Daisy’s a little darling and worth waiting another 25 years for.”
