Foodie Fact of the week…..Salmon

Sue Bedford (MSc Nutritional Therapy)

Did you know that salmon is a fantastic food option and one of the greatest sources of omega 3 fatty acids body (EPA & DHA), which may have a variety of positive effects on your health? We cannot make omega 3 fatty acids in the body, instead we need to obtain them through our diet. These fatty acids are so important in our bodies for a variety of reasons including brain health (to help in the prevention of memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease), cell membranes, skin, hair, preventing fatigue, fertility, during the menopause to name a few! The problem is that due to the western diet many people are very deficient. The ratio of omega 3:6 should be roughly 1:1 but due to fast food, ready meals, lack of wholefoods, and fresh fruit and vegetables- the dominance of omega 6 to 3 is between 10:1 to 25:1. This imbalance is leading to inflammation and associated diseases.

As a great source of selenium, calcium, vitamins B, D, and A as well as protein (essential for the production of hormones, enzymes, and necessary for cell growth and repair), fatty fish including salmon may also help lower the risk of heart attack, diabetes, depression, stroke, asthma, and cancer, according to studies.

Because Salmon provides essential fatty acids and omega-3s, which have been linked to lowering inflammation and regulating hormones, it is a fabulous fertility-friendly food. Salmon is also a good source of selenium, a mineral required for healthy sperm. As low vitamin D levels appear to be associated with impaired fertility in both men and women -Salmon is one of the best foods to eat to get your recommended daily intake of vitamin D.
