Heather McMahan, the beloved podcaster and comedian, is bringing her unique humour to a tough topic in her debut Netflix special, “Son I Never Had”
Laughter has always been a powerful medicine during difficult times, and McMahan discovered that firsthand when she started sharing jokes about her infertility journey with audiences. Not only did these jokes help her cope, but they also resonated with others who have struggled on the path to parenthood.
In “Son I Never Had,” McMahan sheds light on the highs and lows of trying to conceive, highlighting the fact that infertility is often a taboo subject. By sharing her own experiences, she hopes to spark conversations and provide comfort to anyone going through fertility issues. McMahan believes that humour can make even the heaviest topics a little lighter.
One of McMahan’s frustrations is the lack of education around fertility for young women
She believes that the focus is often on men’s health and that women should be informed about their fertility at an earlier age. Modern medicine has made advancements in this field, and McMahan hopes to raise awareness about the importance of proactive fertility care.
Despite the challenges, McMahan persevered through months of IVF and shots, ultimately resulting in the successful harvesting of a single baby girl embryo. However, she remains realistic about the statistical odds of successful implantation. With her busy tour schedule, she plans to undergo another egg retrieval cycle to increase her chances of motherhood. She already envisions the kind of parent she wants to be, emphasising the importance of raising kind and decent human beings.
