Comedian and actress Kristen Wiig has candidly discussed her challenging journey with in-vitro fertilization (IVF) before ultimately embracing surrogacy to become a mother to her now 4-year-old twins, Shiloh and Luna, whom she shares with husband Avi Rothman.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Wiig reflected on the difficulties she faced during the IVF process, describing it as a “struggle.” She emphasized the often hushed nature of discussions surrounding fertility treatments, expressing a desire for more openness and understanding about the topic.
Wiig, now 50, believes that sharing her experience can contribute to a broader conversation, stating, “It’s part of my story and part of how I got my amazing family.”
The IVF process involves the retrieval of eggs from a woman’s ovaries, fertilizing them in a lab to create embryos, and then transferring one or more embryos back into the uterus in hopes of achieving a successful pregnancy and live birth.
Despite the hardships, Wiig expressed immense joy and fulfillment in motherhood. She described it as “the best” experience, acknowledging the transformative effect it had on her perspective and the profound love she feels for her children.
“Overall it was a very beautiful thing, and now that I’m on the other side, I wouldn’t have had it any other way,” the mom of two said. “I’ve always believed that things happen the way they’re supposed to happen, and this is how [our babies] were supposed to get here.”
