Million-to-one cancer survivor gives birth to miracle baby

A woman who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer has given birth to a baby that she conceived using a last-chance embryo

Stacey Broadmeadow, 38, was diagnosed with pseudomyoxoma peritonei and between cancer surgeries preserved her eggs.

Baby Harry was born from just two viable embryos she managed to create from the process.

Stacey said: “Harry was always very much wanted. Ever since I was little I always wanted a baby. He is just wonderful.”

Stacey first became poorly in 2017 with pain near her appendix and spotting in between her periods.

She went to her GP to get it checked out and was sent for an ultrasound where the radiologist saw unusual signs.

Following a series of blood tests and scans, Stacey was referred to an oncologist who suspected she had the rare cancer and told her she may lose her ovaries.

She said: “I was devastated, absolutely devastated. I literally just thought, ‘Well, that’s it then, I am never going to be a mum. I’m never going to have the dream I had wanted all my life.

“But, luckily, my consultant was very positive and kind of gave me hope that she would be able to fix it and the prognosis could be good.”

Stacey had her initial surgery at Christie’s and then was able to have her eggs harvested before she had a second surgery.

She managed to get 17 eggs following two rounds of egg freezing and then had her second cancer surgery – an eight-hour operation.

Stacey took several months to recover from the operation and during COVID had to shield due to the fragility of her health.

Once things started to settle down, Stacey began the process to have Harry.

From the eggs, eight survived being thawed and four embryos were created, but just two survived.

She miscarried the first embryo she had transferred and the one that was to become Harry was frozen, but doctors told her it wasn’t that viable.

Stacey decided to go for it and had the transfer in February 2022.

She said: “I call him my little Nemo He’s my little miracle. He’s just so special.

“I feel like I’m going to have so many adventures with this little dude. My life is going to be much more balanced, it’ll be full of lots of love and happiness.”
