I have just been given my infertility cause, and quite honestly, I couldn’t be more frustrated….so here it is..the reason I can’t get pregnant? There is no reason. I have unexplained infertility. Argh!!!!

As ridiculous as this sounds, I wanted there to be a problem, by that I mean a problem that they could find – because you can fix a problem right? Obviously I am no doctor and I am sure it is never this easy, but, you can unblock a tube or remove a cyst, but what do you do for the problem that can’t be found? Nothing..thats what. Absolutely nothing, other than “just keep going”.

So before I go in to the facts I have learnt about this frustrating diagnosis, let me just give you a bit of context. I am 34, my husband is 36. We have been trying to get pregnant for 2 years now. We are relatively healthy people, I ovulate and according to tests done, my husband’s sperm is adequate. I have no blockages, no PCOS, no endo, nothing. However, as each month passes, there is no baby being made. Instead, we are getting more and more worked up and panicked.

But try not to stress they say! Stress wont help you conceive! (Are you kidding me?!)

So what the hell is this “Unexplained infertility” diagnosis all about then? This is what I have learnt:

• Unexplained infertility is a term used when a couple’s inability to conceive cannot be attributed to any specific cause or underlying medical condition. It means that after a thorough medical evaluation, no definitive reason for the infertility can be identified.
• When a couple experiences difficulty in conceiving, medical professionals typically conduct a series of tests and evaluations to determine the potential causes. These evaluations may include assessing hormonal levels, conducting semen analysis for the male partner, evaluating the fallopian tubes and uterus for the female partner, and checking for ovulation and other factors that can affect fertility.
• If all the test results appear normal and there are no apparent issues identified, the diagnosis of unexplained infertility may be given. It is estimated that approximately 10-15% of couples experience unexplained infertility.
• The exact reasons behind unexplained infertility are not fully understood, and it can be frustrating for couples who are eager to conceive. However, it’s important to note that unexplained infertility does not imply that there is no reason for the difficulty in conceiving; rather, it means that the available diagnostic tests have not revealed a specific cause.
• In such cases, fertility specialists may still recommend various treatment options, such as fertility medications to stimulate ovulation, intrauterine insemination (IUI), or in vitro fertilization (IVF). These treatments aim to increase the chances of conception by assisting with the fertilisation process or enhancing the conditions for successful implantation of the embryo.

So there you go – something is stopping me from conceiving naturally, but the tests just can’t figure out what it is. So it’s IVF for me next. Hopefully, with the help of the clever doctors and embryologists, they can help me with this very difficult baby making!
