A groundbreaking US survey has taken a first look at what it is really like to be a surrogate
Surrogacy agency, Surrogate First developed the survey as it was felt there was no concrete data on the views of surrogates.
Chief executive officer, Jeff Hu, spoke to Yahoo! News about the survey.
He said: “In the field of surrogacy, there just isn’t much data or research when it comes to what surrogates think.
“We want to provide a safer and better surrogacy journey for our surrogates. These results can help us really understand the areas where they need help or face challenges.”
The results of the survey, which was completed by 168 surrogates, showed that nearly all wanted to have continued contact with the intended parents after birth as they had built such a close relationship and that surrogacy costs and benefits had increased by 35 percent in recent years.
Jeff said: “The majority of surrogates want to have some sort of relationship. In some cases, they become part of the family. They’ll do baby photos together and become lifelong friends.”
And when it comes to compensation, Jeff said things had certainly changed over the years.
He said: “Surrogacy involves a lot. It’s very expensive and has gone up in price.
“I tell my clients they can expect to end up paying anything between $100,000 and $150,000 to complete the entire cycle.”
The amount of compensation for the surrogate is likely to be within the region of between $50,000 and $60,000 in the US.
