Strictly’s Amy Dowden starts fertility treatment following mastectomy

Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Amy Dowden has revealed she had begun fertility treatment to preserve her eggs following her breast cancer diagnosis

The 32-year-old Welsh ballroom and Latin dancer took to her Instagram page to tell her 418,000 followers she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

She said in the post: “I’ve got some news to share. I’ve recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, but I’m determined to get back on that dancefloor before you know it.”

The star, who recently married her partner, Ben Jones, discovered a lump in her breast just days before she was due to go on honeymoon.

She had a mastectomy and is now starting the process of having her eggs frozen to preserve her fertility.

She told her followers she hopes to be back on the hit BBC show later this year if all she requires is radiotherapy.

In an interview with the Mirror, Amy said: “If I only require radiotherapy, I will be back for this season of Strictly. Once the radiotherapy is done, there’ll be nothing stopping me; there is no pressure, but Strictly is leaving the door open. It’s having something to work towards.”

Amy said she felt quite anxious about the fertility treatment process just two weeks after her mastectomy.

She said: “I’ve always wanted to be a mum, and when I got the news that I’d got cancer, I didn’t realise it could affect my fertility.

“Thank you so much for all your lovely messages, comments, and support has meant the world to me.”
