Surviving IVF with a (Slight) Smile

By Fertility Advocate Jennifer Jay Palumbo

When you’re on the rollercoaster ride called IVF (In Vitro Fertilization), self-care isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity. This journey is full of ups, downs, and unexpected loops, and taking care of yourself is crucial. So, let’s embark on this hilarious yet empathetic adventure into the world of self-care during IVF, where we’ll combine laughter with invaluable tips for your sanity and well-being.

Laughter, the Best Medicine: Let’s begin with the cornerstone of IVF self-care: laughter. IVF is a journey riddled with uncertainty, hormone-induced mood swings, and countless awkward moments. But remember, it’s okay to laugh at yourself! Whether it’s your “hormotional” meltdowns or the oh-so-chic hospital gown fashion, find humor in the absurdity of it all.

Yoga with a Side of Hormones: Ah, yoga is the age-old practice of finding inner peace while contorting your body into impossible positions. During IVF, yoga can help relieve stress and anxiety. Plus, it’s an excellent way to prepare for those daily hormone injections – you’re already a pro at deep breathing!

Indulge in Guilty Pleasures: Self-care often involves indulging in your favorite guilty pleasures. So, watch that cheesy reality show, devour a pint of ice cream (or two), and don’t feel guilty about it. IVF is tough; treat yourself kindly.

Me Time like a Pro: Carve out some “me time” in your hectic IVF schedule. Whether it’s a bubble bath, reading a good book, or simply staring at the ceiling while pondering life’s mysteries – cherish these moments when it’s just you, yourself, and the embryos in the lab.

Surround Yourself with Positivity: Your support network is essential during IVF. Surround yourself with people who uplift you. But remember, limiting time with well-meaning friends and family who offer unsolicited advice is perfectly fine. Practice the art of polite deflection, and don’t be afraid to set boundaries.

Dance Through the Hormones: Have you ever tried to dance while your ovaries felt like they were throwing a tantrum? It’s quite a sight! But dancing can be therapeutic. Put on your favorite tunes, let loose, and remember that you’re a warrior tackling this obstacle course with grace (or at least your best attempt).

The Power of Deep Breaths: Taking a deep breath might sound cliché, but it’s crucial. Between the medication schedules and appointments, life can feel like a whirlwind. Take a moment each day to breathe deeply, grounding yourself in the present.

Journal Your Journey: Documenting your IVF journey through journaling can be therapeutic. It’s a safe space to pour out your thoughts and feelings, whether hilarious or heartbreaking. Plus, it’s an opportunity to create a time capsule of your unique experience.

Mindful Meditation… with a Twist: Meditation can help calm the chaos within, but let’s add a humorous twist. Picture yourself as a fertility ninja battling infertility demons. Breathe in tranquility; breathe out resilience. Infertility might be a formidable opponent, but so are you.

Find Your Fertility Support Group: IVF can feel isolating, but you’re not alone. Seek a fertility support group where you can share your experiences, swap stories, and find comfort in knowing others understand your rollercoaster.

Treat Yourself Days: Designate “Treat Yourself” days. Spoil yourself with a massage, a manicure, or that fancy coffee you usually deny yourself. You deserve it, and these small luxuries can make a big difference.

When trying to survive the hell of infertility, this question comes up a lot… even though it’s rude as hell. So, if you’re going to try to remain sane, below are just a few strategies you may want to employ:

The Diplomatic Diversion: “Well, we’re still practicing making them.”

The Sci-Fi Spin: “We’ve decided to wait until the technology advances to the point where we can have robot children. It’s in the works.”

The Pet Parade: “We’re not sure about kids, but our cats are expecting a litter any day now. It’s practically the same thing, right?”

The Foodie Feint: “We’re considering starting a food blog instead. We’ve already mastered the art of making the perfect soufflé.”

The Astral Answer: “We’re actually planning on adopting a family of aliens from a distant galaxy. They’ve got a thing for our planet.”

The Career Conundrum: “We’re investing all our time in raising our careers right now. We’re considering sending them to college in a few years.”

The DIY Deterrent: “We’re on a mission to single-handedly repopulate the rainforest. One tree at a time.”

The Time-Traveling Trick: “We’re working on it, but time travel isn’t as easy as it looks in the movies.”

The Comedic Countdown: “We’re taking bets with our friends. Whoever guesses the right month gets a lifetime supply of diapers… and the crap that is in them.”

The Cosmic Answer: “Actually, we’re planning to adopt a family of aliens from another galaxy. They’ve always been fascinated with Earth.”

In the midst of the IVF whirlwind, remember to find joy in the small victories, laugh at the absurdity, and cherish the love that brought you on this journey in the first place. IVF is a challenge, but it’s also a testament to your strength, resilience, and the love you have to offer.

Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s a lifeline. Embrace it, and may your IVF journey be sprinkled with laughter, love, and a dash of hope. You’ve got this!
