What does a gynecologist do?

We don’t know about you, but it was only when we realised that natural conception was proving harder than expected, did we really start to think about the functionality of our reproductive health system, and the fine workings of our vaginas

Years would pass, with just the dreaded smear test once in a while being the only check up “downstairs”. Having our own gynecolgist sounded like something only the rich busy women in the movies had. So should we have been visiting one sooner? Is it too late to have our very own gynecologist? And if so, what do they actually do? We got to the (front) bottom of things to find out…

So what exactly is a gynecologist?

A gynecologist is a medical doctor who specialises in the health of the female reproductive system. They are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions related to the female reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, cervix, and vagina.

I always go to my local GP for my smear test when I get the letter in the post promoting me. If I do this, why would I need to see a gynecologist too?

How do I find a good gynecologist?

There are several ways to find a good gynecologist:

  1. Ask for referrals: You can ask your primary care doctor, family, friends, or acquaintances for recommendations. They may be able to suggest a gynecologist they have had a positive experience with.
  2. Check online reviews: You can read online reviews of gynecologists in your area on healthcare websites or social media platforms. This can help you gauge the experiences of other patients and their satisfaction with the doctor.
  3. Check the doctor’s credentials: You can check the doctor’s qualifications and credentials, including their education, board certification, and any disciplinary actions or malpractice claims against them. This information can be found on the doctor’s website, state medical board, or professional organisations.
  4. Consider location and convenience: You may want to consider the location of the doctor’s office, availability of appointments, and insurance coverage when selecting a gynecologist.
  5. Schedule a consultation: You can schedule a consultation with a gynecologist to discuss your health concerns and get a sense of their communication style and approach to care. This can help you determine if they are a good fit for you.

Overall, finding a may take some research and consideration, but it is an important step in maintaining your reproductive health.
