Record number of women having children in their 40s, new report shows

Data released by the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) has said there has been a 12 percent increase in women aged between 45 and 49 having children

The data also showed that women aged between 40 and 44 had risen by four percent in 2022 – a record high on the previous year.

Researchers say the upturn in numbers is down to a number of factors, but the main one is women putting off starting a family until later in life due to career aspirations, travelling, and their social life in their younger years.

The rise in social egg freezing has also played a part in women becoming mothers later in life.

One celebrity that is part of bucking the trend is Hilary Swank who recently gave birth to twins at the age of 48.

It noted that the birth rate among younger women (aged 20-34) continued to decline and has hit a record low in the 20 to 24 age range.

Official data showed that 3,000 fewer babies were born in 2022 than the previous year.
