A woman who was made infertile following a surgery procedure has welcomed a baby after winning a payout
Donna Roberts, 41, was undergoing a bowel operation 15 years ago, leaving her with internal injuries and infertile.
The surgery meant it was not safe for them to harvest any eggs, which was the reason the couple began legal action.
In 2020, the Supreme Court ruled that women left infertile from medical negligence could claim the cost of surrogacy abroad. The ruling meant that Donna could fund an egg donor and surrogate in San Diego, California.
Although it has not been confirmed, it is believed her lawyers managed to secure her a £1 million settlement, and Donna and her husband, Mark, will celebrate the first birthday of their daughter, Mia, in August 2023.

What I went through in the hospital has changed my life forever; I’ll never be the same again. But Mia is the ultimate silver lining.”
Donna underwent the operation in 200 for complications occurring from ulcerating colitis. She was left with sepsis and MRSA and told she would not be able to conceive.
Talking about Mia’s birth, Donna said: “It was just the most incredible moment. Because surrogacy is so normal in California, there was absolutely no awkwardness about it.
“For some people, the best option may be adoption. But for us, it’s been a dream come true.”
