Apples (or fresh apple juice) help support the immune system too as they are also rich in vitamin C, and antioxidants and contain many plant compounds including Quercetin (a great anti-inflammatory).
Pears are a great source of polyphenol antioxidants – helping to ‘zap’ those free radicals that may lead to oxidative stress and cell damage. They are low in calories and are a great source of folate, vitamin C, copper, and potassium.
Ginger is great in shots as it provides a powerful kick, but is also linked to helping alleviate gastrointestinal issues, plays a role in reducing inflammation in the body, supports the immune system, rejuvenates skin, and increases energy levels. It also contains anti-microbial properties. Ginger contains many important nutrients and vitamins including vitamins C, B5 and B6, along with a good amount of the mineral potassium, manganese, copper, and magnesium.
Apple cider vinegar has been used for centuries in medicine and for cooking. The ancient Egyptians used it to aid weight loss. It is made by yeast being added to crushed apples, which causes the sugars in the apples to ferment and turn into alcohol. After this, bacteria are added which causes the alcohol to ferment further into acetic acid (vinegar), which is thought to provide the health benefits for which Apple cider vinegar is re-nouned (although there are very few research studies on this vinegar). Organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar also contains a substance called the “mother,” which consists of enzymes, strands of proteins, and ‘good’ bacteria that give the vinegar a cloudy appearance. Apple cider vinegar is thought to lower some bacterial colonies such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which are linked to inflammatory health conditions and certain gut issues such as leaky gut syndrome.
Cinnamon is a warming spice that helps to stabilise glucose and triglyceride levels in the blood – important in relation to fertility and particularly for those with PCOS. It acts as a fantastic antiseptic and a powerful antioxidant which also helps to reduce inflammation in the body.
Lemons are a fab source of vitamin C, fibre, and numerous healthy plant compounds. They provide numerous health benefits including aiding the absorption of iron from plant foods, which can sometimes be more difficult.
All of these amazing ingredients combined together pack a great nutritional punch which not only provide us with energy and help to reduce inflammation, but they are also great for the skin and provide support to the immune system.
